Revolutionizing Tunisia's Energy Infrastructure for 5.5 million customers

Enabling a Smarter, More Resilient Grid for Tunisia

Siemens Advanta and SI Grid Software are supporting one of Tunisia’s most significant energy modernization initiatives through a large-scale Smart Grid program with Société Tunisienne de l'Électricité et du Gaz (STEG). Building on a successful collaboration and a proven operational foundation, the project establishes the digital infrastructure needed to modernize grid operations at national scale. By combining advanced meter data management, system integration, and long-term service support, the program helps create a more connected, resilient, and future-ready energy ecosystem for Tunisia.

The challenge

Tunisia’s national energy infrastructure required modernization to improve billing accuracy, enhance consumption forecasting, increase service reliability, and support a more transparent and efficient energy system.

The solution

Following a successful 500,000-meter pilot and two years of collaboration, STEG validated and operationalized the Meter Data Management System (MDMS), now supporting the meter-to-cash process in production. The pilot was put into operation in May 2025, and a nationwide rollout is underway, scaling to approximately 5.5 million smart meters.

Siemens Advanta acts as the system integrator, delivering the end‑to‑end smart meter logistics system and providing complementary consulting and technical services. Siemens Grid Software supplies the GridscaleX® MDM solution. The order includes
5.5 million licenses, along with maintenance and corrective support through 2035.

The benefits

This project will deliver substantial benefits for STEG and its 5.5 million customers while supporting Tunisia’s energy transition and the goal of increasing the share of renewables in the energy mix from 12% in 2020 to 30% by 2030.

  • For STEG Customers: More accurate billing, improved service reliability with fewer outages, enhanced consumption forecasting, and flexible payment options.
  • For STEG Operations: Enhanced grid management through advanced data, a future-proof energy infrastructure, and a strong, long-term partnership with reliable partner Siemens.
