Granules India Limited, E2E Decarbonization Strategy
End-to-end decarbonisation strategy for Granules India Limited
Granules India Limited, a Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical manufacturer and a market leader in select products including paracetamol and metformin operating across API, PFI and finished-dosage manufacturing, partnered with Siemens Advanta to define a comprehensive and future-ready net-zero roadmap designed to support its long-term sustainability ambitions. As the company advanced its commitment to responsible manufacturing, it sought a holistic approach to managing emissions while balancing operational growth and industry leadership. Siemens baselined Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, calculated product carbon footprints and built a costed net-zero roadmap for the company, including the inputs for its SBTi application, enabling the manufacturer to strengthen its environmental impact while enhancing its position as a sustainable leader in global life sciences.
The challenge
Granules had committed to net zero by 2050 under tightening regulation and direct customer requirements, but had no transparency on its end-to-end emissions. Without a baseline, neither the reduction targets nor the capital behind them could be defended.
The company asked Siemens Advanta to:
- Conduct Scope 3 baselining across the value chain
- Identify the highest-emission sources
- Evaluate more than 50 Scope 1, 2 and 3 reduction levers
- Build a net-zero roadmap with investment cases and detailed engineering for Scope 1 and 2 initiatives
- Calculate the product carbon footprint for five products spanning around 70 variants
- Provide the inputs required for the SBTi application
The solution
The engagement combined bottom-up emissions accounting with on-site technical assessment of plant utilities, so that every recommended measure carried a costed engineering basis.
- Scope 1 and 2: on-site technical assessment: Identified decarbonisation measures at two large manufacturing facilities covering API, PFI and finished dosage, through technical assessment of HVAC systems, boilers, air handling units, air compressors and other major utilities. Shortlisted measures were taken through detailed engineering with a BOQ summary and a full investment case.
- Scope 3: bottom-up baselining: Quantified emissions across 11 Scope 3 categories in line with the GHG Protocol, covering more than 18,000 raw materials and 350 suppliers across seven manufacturing plants, then recommended reduction strategies for supply chain, waste generated, transport and distribution, and business travel.
- Product carbon footprint: Calculated the footprint of five key products spanning around 70 variants, allocating Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions bottom-up at facility and block level for steam, coal and electricity.
- Net-zero roadmap and SBTi inputs: Evaluated over 50 reduction levers and sequenced them into a roadmap with timelines and actions, each backed by an investment case and engineering analysis, and supplied the data inputs for the company's SBTi application.
The benefits
- Defined baseline on Scope 1 / 2 / 3 emissions across facilities
- Product Carbon footprint (PCF) for 5 key products (~70 variants)
- Identification of carbon reduction initiatives and implementation roadmap, with detailed investment cases and engineering analysis
The results
Granules now has a measured emissions position across all three scopes, product-level carbon data for customer and regulatory disclosure, and a funded set of initiatives with an implementation roadmap.
Manufacturing plants covered by the baseline
Scope 3 categories quantified per GHG Protocol
Raw materials assessed across the supply chain
Suppliers included in the Scope 3 baselining
Scope 1, 2 and 3 reduction levers evaluated
Product variants with a calculated carbot footprint
Partnering with Siemens Advanta was instrumental in transforming our sustainability ambitions into an actionable, rigorous blueprint. Faced with strict regulatory pressures and a historic lack of baseline visibility, their team provided a comprehensive E2E decarbonization strategy that successfully mapped our Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. By drilling down into technical asset assessments and developing a detailed Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) for five of our key products, Siemens Advanta delivered much more than a high-level roadmap. They provided the detailed engineering analysis and investment business cases needed to confidently drive toward our Net Zero 2050 timeline.
