A roadmap to smarter, more sustainable campus operations.
Shiv Nadar Institute of Eminence, Deemed to be University, Delhi-NCR, a top ranked global university in India partnered with Siemens to define a comprehensive and future-ready net zero roadmap designed to support its long-term sustainability ambitions. As the university advanced its commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, it sought a more holistic approach to managing emissions across campus operations while balancing cost efficiency, growth plans, and academic excellence. Siemens helped shape a strategic pathway covering carbon, water, and waste neutrality, supported by emissions baselining, year-on-year targets, implementation planning, and integrated solution concepts for smarter campus operations. The initiative also laid the foundation for stronger governance, improved sustainability monitoring, and innovation through campus-wide digital infrastructure, enabling the university to strengthen its environmental impact while enhancing its position as a leader in sustainable education.
The challenge
After adopting UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) in 2021, the university had been advancing a multi-year net zero ambition with targeted measures across energy, water and waste management. Now the institute wanted to have a more holistic coverage of its emissions and a detailed implementation roadmap. The goal was to optimize cost and carbon footprint while keeping the future growth plans intact and becoming a sustainability thought leader.
The solution
Our project defined a comprehensive roadmap for carbon, water, and waste neutrality, including year-on-year targets, use cases prioritization, integrated solution architecture, implementation plans, and a detailed business case. We also designed concepts for a Living Lab and a campus wide integrated Command & Control Center. Together with our technology integration experts, we conducted technical assessments on microgrids, EV charging, HVAC, electrical systems, and water networks.
The project also helped to set up a sustainability monitoring and governance operating model to help manage the risks, conduct scenario-based planning / pivots to achieve its net zero timelines.
