MEET NICOLE

"One of our greatest strengths in Siemens Advanta is our global team. Our diverse cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives offer a great advantage when approached with the spirit of collaboration and mutual-respect.” Nicole, Senior Consultant at Siemens Advanta Solutions

Meet the world with curiosity

Even as a child, Nicole felt the urge to get to the bottom of things, when she was tinkering with machines with her father and grandfather. When the opportunity arose during her studies to start as a Solutions Engineer intern at the Smart Grid Solutions team in Houston, Texas (USA) in 2014, she jumped at the chance, stayed after she finished her university program, and quickly knew she had found her place in the world: a place where she can follow her curiosity, explore solutions to new challenges, and learn new things every day. “There’s an investigative nature in everything we do at Siemens Advanta,” she says, “whether it’s working with our customers to understand how best we can enable them to meet their goals or with developers to expand our product capabilities, there is no shortage of opportunities to learn.”

DEVELOP UNIQUE DIGITAL SOLUTIONS WITH THE POWER OF A GLOBAL TEAM

From the beginning Nicole was part of global initiatives and had the opportunity to support projects across four continents. Since she sees herself first and foremost as a global citizen, it was not difficult for her to integrate into the international structures and the team. Quite the contrary, she felt included and welcomed: “One of our greatest strengths in Siemens Advanta is our global team. Our diverse cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives offer a great advantage when approached with the spirit of collaboration and mutual-respect.”

This unique work environment empowers each of us to manage our own time while encouraging teamwork and efficiency.

Every project Nicole has worked on has opened new horizons and diverse perspectives for her, satisfying and fueling her curiosity at the same time. Of course, there also have been challenges and times when it's been difficult during her time as part of the Platform Solutions team, but it's when the strengths, Nicole sees as essential, have stood the test of time: “Adaptability is the bedrock on which Siemens Advanta is built and with it came a level of trust which has never ceased to amaze me. This unique work environment empowers each of us to manage our own time while encouraging teamwork and efficiency.”

Nicole remembers one project where these values were particularly important. She was in Boston at the time and joined a European smart meter implementation project. Working with colleagues in eight countries, with time zones ranging from 5 to 9 hours ahead of her own, adaptability, teamwork and trust were essential, paired with clear communication and organization. Even when the global pandemic was added as an extra challenge, the team repositioned itself and brought the project forward with careful planning, a proactive approach and generous knowledge sharing. After the successful handover to the customer “we still make time to check in with one another and have fun“, tells Nicole. “Our team is a true example of the people making the place and I count myself lucky to be able to work alongside such knowledgeable and energized individuals.”

Her work with the EMEA team brought Nicole to Dublin, which she can now call home and with that “I moved one step closer to my long-held goal of exploring 30 countries before I turn 30”, she emphasizes.

Use nature as a model and protect it with your heart

In her new home in Ireland, Nicole can not only cross one of her 30 countries off her bucket list, but also pursue her other passion: beekeeping. Her fascination with bees began at a young age and continues today, not least because Nicole is always discovering new things and learning a lot from the creatures about how to find solutions in innovative and ever-changing ways. “In Houston and Boston, I had a chance to work with a local beekeepers who kept hives in homes, community gardens, and brought them to schools for educational purposes. They were outspoken voices for the bees and showed me innovative techniques of hive management.” Carrying the impressions from that time, curiosity and knowledge sharing with her, Nicole is now actively involved in protecting native Irish bees and supporting pollinators: “I now spend as much time as I can learning how to support biodiversity in Ireland and spreading awareness about the threats they face and ways we can all drive change.”
